The Shire is one of the biggest horse breeds in the world. With a height the can pass 5 1/2 feet or 1.7 meters (17.1 hands high), they are majestic, but in spite of their size they are known for their calm and friendly temperament. Even more characteristically they are know for their heavy feathering at the fetlock.
As well as being big they are also very strong, and it's said that it can pull up to 5 1/2 tons without a problem. This made the Shire a more popular warhorse in the middle ages as it could carry a soldier with heavy armour.
